Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that I would be saying this, but Tyler Hoechlin as Superman deserves his own television show. When I was first introduced this actor through his role as the blunt and smug Martin Brewer on 7th Heaven, he was my least favorite character on the show. Unfortunately, I sometimes have a bad habit of judging an actor by the part he plays which couldn't be more wrong. Hoechlin definitely proves through his portrayal of the Man of Steel on Supergirl.
Hoechlin has the gentle charisma and build of Christopher Reeve, but doesn't mimic his mannerisms and personality the way Brandon Routh did in Superman Returns. You'll notice very quickly that most of my comparisons for the role and personality of the Man of Steel always hearken back to Christopher Reeve. He's who I grew up watching as Superman the most. He also plays the Last Son of Krypton with an air of compassion, while not having a problem putting his anger and drive into high gear to take care of the bad guys when need be.

If I had my way, Tyler Hoechlin would play Superman in the theatrical DC Universe as well. I find him way more appealing than Henry Cavill's portrayal of the character. No offense to Cavill, who I loved in Mission: Impossible - Fallout, but he's so bland and uninspired as the Man of Steel. Don't get me wrong, he definitely LOOKS the part, but there's just something missing in his portrayal of both Clark Kent and Superman. I feel like Hoechlin really relishes in the role and is grateful to be playing such an iconic character. Cavill just has this vibe of not really caring or respecting what a great opportunity he was given to embody such a legendary hero of the ages, almost like he takes it for granted.
Superman will be returning to what is called the Arrowverse for an upcoming crossover event which begins on Sunday, December 9th with a special episode of The Flash. Hoechlin will be back as the Man of Steel to fight side-by-side with his fellow DC super heroes. This time, he'll be bringing his partner-in-journalism Lois Lane with him.
