Home Entertainment Review: Spongebob Squarepants: The Legend of Boo-kini Bottom

For years Spongebob Squarepants has been dominating Nickelodeon as one of their most popular series. They have created not only a fun hilarious series, but it has become so much more than just the TV series with a product juggernaut and a feature films. Now fans of the popular series can bring home yet another special home with Spongebob Squarepants: The Legend of Boo-kini Bottom on DVD.

This terrifying tale tells the story of the Flying Dutchman coming to Bikini Bottom to make sure everyone in town is scared--especially SpongeBob, who seems to be unflappable in his belief that spooky things are actually funny. Inspired by the visual style of classic stop-motion animation TV specials, The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom was brought to life in three dimensions by Los Angeles-based stop-motion studio Screen Novelties. With a show that has been around for so long it has to be hard to keep doing something new with them, but this special does just that in a fun hilarious way.

This isn’t the first time they did stop motion with the Spongebob Universe, but this special stepped up anything they had done before. I always enjoy the show, but love this form of animation and it served these characters perfectly. They captured the essence of the characters while bringing a new dimension to them quite literally. The story is hilarious and features some great visuals and of course all the fun of the world of Spongebob and his friends.

This is yet more proof to why this character and his world has maintained its strong presence in animation for so long. This release includes the stop motion must see special, but also behind the scenes featurettes with the voice cast and the inner workings on how they brought this special to life.
