Home Entertainment Review: Supernatural: The Complete Thirteenth Season

These days The CW has become probably best known for their series of DC live action superhero shows, but long before all of them there was their long running hit Supernatural. Now the show is heading into its fourteenth season so what better time to relive the previous season with Supernatural: The Complete Thirteenth Season.

Supernatural follows Sam and Dean Winchester as they follow their father's footsteps, hunting down evil supernatural creatures such as monsters, demons, and even fallen gods while trying to save innocent people along the way. Continuing the "family business" after their father's death, the brothers soon discovered that the "hunt" doesn't just involve slashing and hacking monsters and demons but also dealing with more powerful creatures such as angels, reapers, and even Death. Last season, the Winchesters were reunited with their resurrected mother, Mary, who joined forces with the British Men of Letters. But things turned from bad to worse, with the return of Lucifer and the surprising revelation that the Devil was expecting a child with a human mother. In Season Thirteen, Sam and Dean find themselves facing Lucifer’s offspring, a creature of almost unimaginable power - one that could save the world... or destroy it.

You would think that after a show being on for thirteenth seasons that it would start wearing thin and while this series has had some weak moments and even seasons it continues to deliver. The big reason for this is the main cast of Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins. We all know that the Winchesters are the backbone of this show and their chemistry and overall performances have been great from since season one. When Collins joined the series he grew into essentially a third brother to them and the three offer up so many great moments together and individually it is hard to not love them. The stories obviously keep a lot of the same themes these days and have kind of gotten away from the case of the week format, but they still interject them in there to keep it feeling fresh.

This season they stepped things up even more with a great animated episode featuring one of the most iconic cartoons of all time. While I am sure most already know what it is I am choosing to not spoil it for those that have not, but it’s one of the best episodes they have ever done. Every season they tend to step the action up and effects as well with this one being no different. As with every season this one not only ended on yet another cliffhanger, but also kind of rebooted some elements and characters in a way that will no doubt make for an interesting fourteenth season. In addition to all 23 episodes of the season this release features bonus content including commentaries, unaired scenes, a gag reel and numerous featurettes that take you behind bringing the hit series to life.

Join the hunt and grab your copy of Supernatural: The Complete Thirteenth Season when it hits Blu-ray and DVD on September 4th from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
