Stream of Conscious Review: The Predator
In the grand scheme of things, The Predator fits in quite nicely with all the other films in the franchise. Great visual effects that I really didn't feel were too bogged down by CGI. The Super Predator was a pretty cool concept that could be fun if re-visited in a future sequel. The cast of characters were varied enough to keep me interested.
I've never been too attached to the Predator franchise to where I pay attention to continuity or anything else of that nature. I like all the movies including the Alien vs. Predator ones. The one I remember liking the most is Predator 2 and my least favorite being Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem.
Some of the dialogue in The Predator was less than stellar. There was quite a bit of profanity, with some of it being uttered by a child. The first trailer for the film gave everyone the idea that some influence was taken from the Amblin films from the 1980s, where kids would curse all the time. The child in this movie says the F word more than once, which seems a bit drastic. There's a couple of off-color comments that some might deem racist in our present moral climate. Some rather crass sexual comments are mad as well. All of it really is unnecessary and will no doubt limit some young viewers with strict parents.
The Predator definitely doesn't hold back on its gore and graphic violence. There are beheadings, impalements, headshots, and plenty more for gorehounds to enjoy here. We also get to see some Predator goo as they have their heads smashed in and arms cut off. The story for The Predator is pretty easy to follow and doesn't get too complex. It all makes sense as it unravels and doesn't slow up much to let you catch your breath. Many reviewers have stated their dissatisfaction with the last thirty minutes of the movie and feel like it was tacked on at the last second. I felt like it it all fit together seamlessly. Some might find the last few moments of the film and the set-up for a sequel to be silly, but I was fine with it.
The Predator is available to rent or buy now online or in a store near you.
