Comic Book Review: KISS: The End #1

KISS is heading towards the End of the Road in their final world tour. To commemorate the moment, Dynamite Entertainment brings the supergroup to The End in a new limited comic book series. Issue #1 of the new title promises an adventure of epic proportions.

What lies beyond our world? Is there a heaven? Is there a hell?

When a young man finds himself on the wrong side of life, he encounters Death itself and is set on a quest to seek out his errant demon offspring in an attempt to make his way back to the world of the living! But there is much peril on the way and the only ones who can help him are KISS!

Writer Amy Chu is no stranger to the world of KISS. She's taken the ultimate rockstars into space and beyond in Dynamite's first highly entertaining sci-fi tale featuring the Hottest Band in the Land, The Elder and then concentrating on The Demon series. Now she has transported the Starchild, the Demon, the Spaceman, and the Catman into a desolate world of gods and monsters or a combination of both.

Artist Edu Menna (Z Nation, The Twilight Zone: Shadow & Substance) does a great job of breathing visual life into KISS: The End. The colors give the illustrations a vibrant depth that adds a certain tone to every panel. Although the band is seen rarely in this first issue, when they do appear, they come across as enigmatic and powerful immortal beings with a purpose. Much of that has to do with the mastermind penciling them on paper.

KISS: The End #1 is a great start for a new series that pays tribute to an iconic rock and roll band which deserves to be celebrated. It gives readers the perfect amount of mystery to keep them intrigued and hungry for the next issue. When the last panel of the issue is gazed upon, you're left frantically thinking, "We have to wait a whole month for more?!?!"
